The term “jewel box” was originally coined by architect Louis Sullivan, a mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright. His work — featuring elaborate facades, detailed plasterwork, painted murals, stained-glass windows, and ornate, gold-plated details — was reminiscent of jewelry boxes.
I’ve expanded the term to any vintage home that has kept original pieces: hardwood floors, beautiful woodwork, stained- or leaded-glass windows, original light fixtures, that kind of thing.
